Santa has arrived at our local mall. I'm not sure how long he has been there, but when we went today he was there! Since there was no line, Little Man beggged to go see Santa, I agreed. When we made our way through the maze that most people spend hours waiting in post-Thanksgiving, we got to Santa. Little Man gave him a high five and stepped away. Santa asked him if he wanted a candy cane and Little Man stepped closer. Santa asked him what he wanted, Little Man said, "a green fire engine", I said, "good luck, Santa!". Santa laughed and said, "how 'bout a red fire engine". Little Man pondered that for half a second and then said, "no I want green...it's my favorite". Santa looked at me, laughed and said that he had never been asked for a green fire engine before. Anyone know where to get a green fire engine?
Little Man is also loving the storm clean up. We have a LOT of trees on our property,thus we have a lot of leaves and branches. During the storm we had at least 3-4 big branches come down in our front/side yard. Out back was a whole different story. There were many trees/branches down. Luckily they all missed our house and little man's play area. We're hoping and praying that the branch still hanging from one of the trees decides to wait to fall until the tree man comes.
Last night we drove by a roller skating rink and I asked little man if he wanted to go (he hasn't a clue to what roller skating is). He said, "no I need to go skiing with heyda first....Heyda said he wants to take me". My father has a busy winter ahead of him!

Funny Things Said.....
When we lost power during the storm, we unfortunately also lost our water (well water) and so we told little man that he could not flush the toilet. This caused a lot of questions re: sanitation. Once we figured out where we'd be staying, he was so surprised that he could flush their toilet. When we told him we had power at our house again and could go home he exclaimed, "Mommy, I can flush the potty now?!?". "Yes, little man you can." Apparently, that was the most traumatic part of the power outage for him.
There were also the questions of "why".... "why doesn't the lights turn on?", "where's the power?", "why haven't the men turned on our power?". All that said, when you have no power, no running water and you have a 3 year old, one must constantly know where working toilets are. Frequently, I would ask, "Do you have to go potty?" every time we passed by a house of someone we knew, a restaurant or the police station (local emergency shelter) I would ask. Little man finally told me, "Mommy I am all done answering that question". Oh, dear, sounds like mommy has said that phrase too frequently :)

Two Months Later....
Well, since the last post, we've moved, gone to Pennsylvania twice, had a baby, started preschool...It has been busy at our house.
In the middle of August 2 weeks and 2 days early Baby Brother arrived. He came the weekend of the big move. Thankfully, my parents had decided to take Little Man on a vacation to the beach with them, to keep him out of the way during the move. Little did he know that not only would he be in a new house after his vacation, he'd also have a baby brother! Baby Brother started wearing prefolds and covers at 2 weeks old. Since then he has gained almost 4 lbs, making wearing the OS easier, however, much to my dismay I have found that many of my 0S diapers need elastic repairs, Little Man severely stretched them out :)
Little Man started pre school about 3 weeks ago and has been enjoying meeting new people and singing new songs. He also was the recipient of a Power-wheels Jeep. One of Kevin's co-workers nicely gave it to him, (hand-me-down), he is now the envy of his Uncles and all of the neighborhood children.
Baby Brother took his first road trip to PA this weekend. He did great! Slept a lot and would only cry when hungry!
7 weeks until I go back to school.....

Busy, busy.....
We have been super busy so far this summer...and it doesn't appear to be slowing down at all.
First off, being pregnant in the hot/humid summer is not pleasant, although I just started swelling this week (during the cooler weather) and it isn't bad yet...thank goodness!) The baby is due in 4.5 weeks!!
Second, traveling is great fun. When you are pregnant the great fun turns into kinda fun. The traveling part is not fun, the once you get there part is. We've been to VT, ME (twice) and western MA so far this summer. All has been great fun and thankfully great weather! During one trip to ME, we ended up in Bath for a parade and Little Man tearfully announced, "I don't wanna take a tubby" and requested that grandpa go first.
Little man is almost potty trained! Cloth has taken a back seat this summer. I've been slowly transferring all of my OS diapers over to smaller infant sized. I've also bought 12 prefolds, a couple of covers and snappis for Baby Brother. The diapers are almost all prepped and ready to go!
Little Man is currently sporting pull-ups (well Earth's Best that have less chemicals and yucky stuff in them). I feel slightly guilty about this, but he was wearing 1 diaper a day and not getting it dirty....and I felt that washing 1-2 diapers every 2-3 days was a waste of time...so I voted...and Babies R Us had a huge sale, packages for $5!!
We are also a litlte crazy, in the midst of all this we are packing to move. Sigh. You never realize how much stuff you have until you try to neatly pack it into small boxes and run out of packing paper.

A day away...
This weekend we decided to surprise daddy and go away for Fri/Saturday. It was an "adventure" and Little Man would often question, "what are we doin? We on an adventure".
To start with Kevin only knew we would be going away for the two days and he needed a bathing suit. As we started driving, he became confused (he thought we would be heading to Maine, not to the south). We ended up heading south and finally entered Mystic, CT! On Friday the weather was gorgeous, so we visited a lighthouse near Mystic.
Little Man was very excited to go to the beach, but once we told him we could climb the lighthouse, he couldn't wait to get up the stairs....and ladder.
The rest of the afternoon was spent exploring the coastline and a fort. We then went out to dinner, yummy ice cream, and of course went swimming in the pool (the ocean was much too cold).
The next day we went to the Mystic Aquarium. This whale was quite funny, it kept opening its mouth by all of the people standing near the window, you could hear it "singing" on the other side of the glass. Little Man wasn't sure what to make of it.
The cloth came along for the trip and did really well! We over packed (unsure of our plans on Saturday due to the weather), but had plenty of options available!

Newborns and Cloth Diapers
When little man was born, I was ready to start cloth diapering. There was a slight problem, itty-bitty legs and seemingly HUGE diapers. Luckily, the hospital provided us with 2 or 3 packs of diapers that got us through the first week or so. My goal this time around is to cloth diaper from the start. That being said I need to re-evaluate my stash.
The other day I went to a cloth diaper store down the road (30 minutes or so) from us. Little man and I explored our options and bought 2 Lil Joeys (ladder print and green). The Lil' Joeys are so stinkin' cute! They're super tiny, but will fit through 12lbs, which is good because most 1 sized diapers do not fit until 10-12 lbs. (They all claim to fit at 8lbs, but the itty-bitty legs make that difficult). Anyway, my next plan is to invest in a dozen newborn prefolds and some covers.
While at the store, I discovered their used diaper section. This is always exciting to me, because many times you can get brand new diapers for a much cheaper price! I was able to get two GroVia diapers that will hopefully fit both Little Man and Baby brother. GroVia rebranded itself last year (it was GroBaby) and resized their diapers. The GroBaby's only last us through 30lbs, the new dipes are supposed to go to 40!! We tried out the AIO and the shell this weekend with good results.

My Ideal Stash....
I was recently approached by a friend who wanted to know what I thought of a specific brand of diapers and how they would work. I thought about it and gave my opinion. Looking back over the past 2 years into cloth diapering (and a little boy with no interest in the potty..I ask, he says, "no thank you mommy"), I figured it would be fun to determine my perfect- money is no option- stash...well minimum stash.
Newborn:

Why all the work for a newborn? Newborns have teeny-tiny legs that cannot fit into One Sized diapers (OS). Little man was over 10lbs before the OS really fit him well. I am not a big fan of prefolds, however, they are cheap, they do work and can be reused as burp cloths! Also, you can get a large amount of them for relatively little money. If you think about it you spend around $0.20/ disposable diapers and change the baby up to 10 times a day... it works out to be quite a bit of money over the first 3 months.
10-30 lbs (or maybe a little less)

5 OS Bum Genius Pockets

There are many other brands that I like and would also love to put in here, but I was thinking minimum of what I like and would do if I were to start over.
To make this price cheaper buy used and on sale. Many websites offer used diapers such as, Craigslist and diaperswappers. Also, if there is one brand that you really like get 15-20 diapers in their OS option(s). I think we have over 40 diapers, with 10 or so no longer used due to sizing or frustration with their performance. Many of my diapers were bought used or on clearance (probably 1/2). Four were free, either won in a contest or given by a website for purchasing a specific amount of merchandise.

Travelling with cloth
Over the past 3 weeks we have done a lot of travelling. We've been to 3 airports on 4 air-planes and in a Toyota Highlander for over 48 hours.
Right before Christmas we went to Nashville for a week to visit friends. The cloth wanted to come, but due to travelling constraints and time constraints (I didn't get the g-diapers inserts in time) we decided to go disposable. We had a great time in Nashville and even saw ICE! if you ever get the chance to go to ICE! you should it is amazing.
After Christmas and before the big blizzard we started driving to Florida. The cloth and g-diapers came along for the really long ride. Little man did a great job the entire time. He never complained about the long trips, the long waits between rest stops, the inexplicable traffic going southbound 90 miles north of Savannah (even though his mommy did). He really enjoyed his new "TV", which is really a portable DVD player that a friend gave to him. It was definitely a life saver.
After Florida we came home with a loaded trailer of furniture and stuff to sort through...more about that later.
Two quick stories from the trip:
On the way home from Nashville we were boarding the plane, Southwest was our carrier so people sat closer to the front, and little man was concerned saying, "oh, no mommy they all filled up!". With some reassurance we found three seats together and enjoyed our flight to BWI. Once we had landed in Boston we told little man that we were home. He was quite excited and ran down the little hallway leading to the concourse and as we enter the concourse he threw his arms up in the air and yelled "I HERE!". Ladies and gentleman, Little Man has landed. We got a few chuckles and quickly made our way to baggage claim and home.
Prayer time at dinner has been an interesting learning experience. Little Man often starts his prayers thanking Jesus for the food and then looking to me for some more things to say. In Baltimore one night, he paused and I leaned over to give him some ideas and he whispered, "shh...mommy, I praying"...he then continued to say thank you for his family in a normal volume.
