Junior Park Ranger: Longfellow-Washington House

This National Historic Site is 11,000 square feet of historic interest.

The house was built in the early 1700s one of 5 houses near the Charles River in Cambridge.  The house is huge.  The grounds are pretty.   The waiting area is tiny.

The ranger program is a choice of a small booklet for 6-8 year olds or 9+.  The booklet was set up with things to find in each room on the tour or things to listen for.  The boys say quietly throughout the tour (45 min) and listened well to information about the house and the Longfellow family.   The information about Washington was surprisingly little.  Not much is known about the time when Washington stayed there.

Each page in their booklet had pictures to find and small things to write about or remark about.   The Longfellow family was proud of the heritage of this house and it was interesting to learn about how the house was gifted as a wedding present!  The boys favorite part was the front back stair case and ringing the doorbell.   I liked the golden ring over their bed.  The ring was used for mosquito netting and "helped" prevent bites.
