We did it. We were so brave and so green. We went away and took cloth diapers (I believe I brought 12 or so). Granted it was an overnight visit, but I felt very nervous. What if we ran out? What if they leaked? What about the smell? My fears were relieved last night when we got home and we still had plenty of diapers left over, only one leak, and the same amount of smell that we usually have. Would I do it again? Sure...only for overnight visits though. I still don't want to overstep our welcome by doing loads of cloth diapers in someone else's washer. Nor do I want to pay for it at the laundromat.
We went to Vermont to visit a good friend of mine. She too uses cloth, although she uses prefolds with covers. Her method is not hard and also does a good job keeping the baby dry, leak-free, and explosion free. A local baby shop has a diaper cleaning service and she is able to drop off diapers weekly and pick up a clean stash (must be nice). Her only real complaint seemed to be the smell of the diaper pail after a week of dirty duds. I can imagine!!
The baby shop had asked its customers for use of their babies as models for their fall and winter clothing. Since we were visiting, our little man got to be a model. He posed himself (on his belly and back)and looked slightly nervous at times, but mainly looked super cute. He even started to suck his thumb part way through the photo shoot.
The shop had an array of organic items and a stash of cloth diapers and supplies. We picked up some diaper liners (finally, right?) and a wooden rattle. We also had a nice discussion about the joys of cloth and washing them yourself with the owners.
We had a great weekend and a fun trip to Vermont. We wish it could have been longer, but we had to attend a dedication class at church!
