Steamtown is an old, still in use, Railroad Yard. It is a boy wonderland. The boys (all 3 of them) loved seeing the trains and exploring the different exhibits.
The Museum is set up in three areas. The first area is in the 1902 Roundhouse and covers Technology of the railways. It had some interesting things to see and touch. The next areas was the 1902 & 1937 Roundhouse, there were very old steam engines to walk around (and not touch!). The engines were small, large, good shape and not-so-good shape. There were some boxcars and pullmans too! The boys got to go on a caboose, a presidential pullman, and a boxcar. They liked discovering that the bathroom emptied onto the railroad track...eww!!
The final museum was the History museum. This museum discussed the areas under the railway yard and what archeologists have discovered. Bigger kids (i.e. ages 9+) could earn a Jr Park Ranger Badge (JPRB) by completing a dig. I was thankfully that we didn't have to dig through coal to get our badges today! The boys liked seeing the old post office car, the business car and exploring the people of the railroad (models of what people would have looked like during this time. We walked outside in the old yard and saw some old snow plow trains and other falling apart relics. This was by far one of the best National Parks we've been to. We will probably stop here again!
