Jr Park Ranger: Fort Necessity

KFort Necessity is a  fort in the fields of south western Pennsylvania.   We actually had to drive up a mountain to get to it!   The fort was built by George Washington during the French and Indian War.   Quick history recap: the French and Indian War was fought before the Revolutionary War, George was about 22 years old. He was intact in charge during this war.    This war was over land, the French, Indians and American/British all claimed this area of land and the war was fought to determine who got it.   Well, the end story is the British won.   It was pointed out that all of this happened only 20 years before we started fighting against England.    Anyway, the French were camped out near by and George hiked his men up the mountain and surprised the French.   He won that battle and killed someone important to the French.   Within a few days the men were back at Fort Necessity, with all of their amo, food, etc inside the fort (yes it is that small circle).  The French and Indians surrounded them and overpowered them.  George expected them to come out into the field to fight (like men, I guess) and had actually set up the fort in a good location.   The French chose to stay within the tree line and shoot George's horses and cows first... and then his men.    Well, George ended up signing a treaty with them, except he did not understand the words that were written... they were in French.   Basically he took full responsibility for what had happened to the important French guy who died a few days earlier.    George was not happy with the outcome of this.    The Inn (pictured above) was not there at the time of George, however, it is on the road that he built.
